Quokka smiling on Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Quokkas at Rottnest Island

As my last stop in Western Australia, I visited the tiny island of Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth.  Here is where you can find possibly the cutest animal that’s ever existed…the quokka!  Known for their friendliness and what looks like a permanent smile, these small marsupials spend their days nibbling on leaves and grasses and resting in the shade.  The best way to encounter them as by riding around on bicycle towards the late afternoon when the sun softens, as quokkas become more active and will come out of the bushes in search for food.  They’re not shy, so it’s not uncommon to see them approach people or hop right past them.  They will sit upright with their tiny paws tucked close as they look up with calm, dark eyes.  And that smile, you can’t help but to smile back.  Standing there among these friendly creatures, I understood why meeting quokkas on Rottnest Island is often described as one of Australia’s most charming wildlife experiences.
