Greece is very special to me, especially the islands. After having worked quite some time on a cruise ship sailing along the Greek coast, I fell in love with its culture, scenery, and music. With so many islands, it’s impossible to say you have ever seen all of Greece. But one can try, right?
Santorini: Greece’s world famous island
In the middle of the Aegean sea lies the volcanic island of Santorini with villages built on the steep cliffs. When you think of Greece, white buildings with blue domed roofs often come to mind. One of the best places to admire this architecture is in the town of Oia on the island of Santorini. With views out over the sea and the whitewashed buildings, Oia is picture perfect. The best time to enjoy Santorini is at sunrise when the crowds are almost non-existent, giving you the sense that you’re the only one on the island. Overlooking the town without the crowds, as the sky turned pink, gave Oia a magical feel to it.

Milos: a hidden gem with white cliffs and pristine beaches
Milos in particular should not be missed. The white cliffs and the spectacular waters of Sarakiniko and Firiplaka are so stunning and the perfect place to take a dip in the water. Not many people visit this place, which makes visiting this island even more special. Rent a scooter and explore this small island for a few days.

Sifnos: beautiful churches on rocks
Even more off the radar is the island of Sifnos. This small island is home to some churches in unique settings, perched on rocks. The Church of the Seven Martyrs is the most iconic one, tucked away in a little bay with its blue dome and whitewashed façade.

Mykonos: Windmills and the ancient temples of Delos
And then there’s the island of Mykonos, often referred to as the party island. Although this may be true in the peak summer, there’s more to Mykonos than that. The main town on the island has authentic little alleyways, waterfront churches and even windmills lined up on a hill, dating back to the 16th century. If you are a history buff, make sure to take a ferry to the island of Delos, right across the water from Mykonos. Here you can explore the ruins of an ancient Greek city, filled with temples, bathhouses and statues.
