Many years ago, I used to work on a sailing ship off the coast of Costa Rica, spending an entire summer visiting the coastal region of this lush Central American country. Summertime in Costa Rica means rain, lots of it. This time around, I decided to visit Costa Rica during the dry season, and I had a completely different experience. Exploring Costa Rica right after the rainy season means that the landscapes were extremely green, waterfalls gushing and the forest in very lush.
Despite being quite a small country, Costa Rica is very diverse and a natures and animal lovers paradise. From volcanoes with crater lakes such as Poas Volcano or the cone shaped Arenal volcano to the rainforests around La Fortuna and the waterfalls of Rio Celeste, Costa Rica doesn’t let you down. With turquoise colors, the waterfalls of Costa Rica feel like something from a different planet. The easiest way to explore this Central American country is by renting a car. The roads are good and locals will happily help you. Having your own wheels also gives you the liberty to explore places that are otherwise a bit harder to get to, so I really got to experience some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful places.
On top of that, it’s the wildlife that makes Costa Rica so special to me. During my trip I got to see sloths, macaws, coatis, toucans, crocodiles and even an agouti. Spending the day looking for sloths was a true highlight for me, watching them go about their daily lives in slow-motion. What amazing animals they are, and I got to see them from very close by and quite a few too!
Below is my favorite selection of travel photos I took during my trip to Costa Rica, including places like Poas, the Blue Falls of Costa Rica, Rio Celeste, Manuel Antonio, La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano and the Nauyaca waterfalls.
