From snowcapped mountains in the Alps to turquoise colored lakes and fairytale villages, Austria is a travel photographers dream. I visit Austria frequently to shoot weddings in the winter, but I had never been there in the summer. The vibe and the experience is completely different and you get to see the true colors of Austria.
As the snow melts, the mountains become a hiker’s paradise and the lakes can actually be swam in. As I traveled from the far west of Austria all the way to the northeast, I noticed how different the landscapes were. As you travel through the Alps with its rocky mountain tops and high alpine lakes like the Lünersee, the landscape slowly changes to green meadows. And in the south of Austria, near the border of Slovenia, there are countless vineyards on rolling hills that look more like Tuscany than Austria. And then there’s the alpine panorama roads, which offers breathtaking views over the countless valleys.
For city lovers, Austria hosts some great places too, with Salzburg being as picturesque of a city as it gets. Salzburgs skyline is filled with baroque buildings and even boasts a giant castle on the top of the hill. And then there’s Innsbruck, literally having the mountains in its backyard. It is one of the very few places in the world from which you can take a train from the city center, and connect to a gondola all the way to the top of the mountains.
Austria is truly a travel photographers dream and I am glad I got to spend a few weeks exploring this place in the summer. I can highly recommend including this country for anyone visiting Europe as it has so much to offer: the hikes are spectacular, the people are friendly and the roads are in excellent condition, making it the perfect destination for a fun road trip!
