I made it to Cuba. If you’re an American, don’t ask me how…because I would have to kill you if I told you. And then what is the fun in that since you won’t be able to go because you’re dead. But all joking aside, I would have to kill you. Moving on…Cuba is exactly what you would expect a country unexposed to the United States to be. It is quite refreshing I tell you. For once, you don’t see a McDonalds or a Starbucks around each corner, nor do you see the latest Ford vehicle cruising down the streets. No American culture anywhere for miles! This is RAW Cuba and though many would argue that the people of Cuba are repressed, I would beg to differ. Without getting political here, I would say that the people are doing better than you would think. Of course it could be better. But after spending a day in Cuba, I realized that Cubans are happy people.
I stood out, like any American would…though I tried to blend in with my Spanish as best as I could. It didn’t help that I was carrying a camera and a lens half the size of my head…and I have a big head. Despite the unintentional intrusion in my part by getting lost in the streets of Havana and wandering around aimlessly in search of surprises, they were very welcoming and curious at the same time. They would stop me in the middle of the street to ask where I was from. When I told them I am from Miami, they were excited to hear about it and eager to share their stories about their loved ones in Miami. One lady was dancing salsa outside her door on the street and invited me to join….which I did. Here I am dancing salsa with a Cuban woman in the middle of a street somewhere in Havana. Can we say priceless? So needless to say that my time in Cuba was more than memorable and I was able to take back with me some of their humor, wittiness, and great mojitos back to the good ol’ U.S. of A.

Cuba in a Day

These are fantastic, takes me right back to when I was there. I happend to stumble across your blog when researching photography, and I am so glad I did, your photos are great and I love the humour!!x
I’m sad that I cannot go here. Though I was born in the United States, my soul certainly isn’t American. I think being from the United States I want more than most to finally find a hideaway without American influences.
You are not alone in these feelings. I am going to take an extended trip throughout south america myself in search of that place. Cuba is one of those places where I plan to spend some time.
These photographs are incredible. I’ve never been to Cuba, but as a Canadian certainly can go. These photographs clearly show it is an interesting place to visit filled with amazing cars, colorful streets and very special people.
You captured the faces so beautifully. We certainly don’t need to know them to appreciate their history in their wrinkes and teeth! The colors are presented artfully, altho in person don’t always appear as such. Thank you for sharing your travel photos.
Beautiful pictures. I’ve been to Cuba now 17 times and it is an AMAZING country. Keep up the good work!
BEAUTIFUL!!!! I so want to go- the pictures were captivating.
